Your Checklist
1. A valid driver license or state ID — This shows who you are. Make sure it is not expired.
2. Proof of income — Bring your two or three most recent pay stubs. If you are self-employed or get paid in cash, bring a few months of bank statements instead. The dealer wants to see that you have money coming in.
3. Proof of where you live — A recent utility bill, lease, or bank statement with your name and address works well. It should be from the last 30 days.
4. Personal references — Write down names, phone numbers, and addresses for about five to eight people who know you. Family, friends, and coworkers are fine. Let them know a dealer might call.
5. Your down payment — Ask ahead of time how the dealer takes payment, such as debit card, cash, or money order. A bigger down payment can mean a smaller monthly payment.
6. Proof of insurance, or a plan to get it — Most financed cars need full coverage. If you do not have it yet, have your insurance company phone number ready so you can set it up on the spot.
7. Your trade-in and its title — If you plan to trade in a car, bring the title and any loan payoff details. Bring the spare keys too.
